Neolamprologus leleupi

Remarks: Neolamprologus leleupi, also known as lemon cichlids, are a classic and ever popular species of Tanganyikan cichlid. Their manageable size, bright yellow color, and fascinating personalities make them a great choice for both beginner and expert keepers alike. While Neolamprologus leleupi are typically bright yellow, their color can actually vary depending on social status and catch location. Some have noted that raising them in bright lighting can help them develop the strongest yellow color upon maturity. Sexing can be difficult, and impossible when young, so groups should be purchased if the intention is to breed them.

  The Neolamprologus leleupi is a rock dwelling species that can be found in the wild guarding their fry in small crevices from any would be predators. This fierce parentage continues to be shown within captive fish as while they are typically non-aggressive toward non-conspecifics, any that dare to come near the spawning cave of a pair will be swiftly dealt with using their surprisingly sharp fangs. When not spawning, they get along well with most similarly sized Tanganyikan cichlids like Julidochromis, Altolamprologus, and other Neolamprologus. However, care should be taken when housing Neolamprologus leleupi with smaller shell-dwellers as some have seen them become aggressive and bully the shellies away from their shells to eat their fry. 

  Feeding the Neolamprologus leleupi is fairly easy as these mostly carnivorous fish aren't very picky at all. They will eat just about any food offered that can fit in their mouths. While they are carnivores, they do benefit from having a bit of algae and vegetable matter in their diets so herbivore pellets and spirulina flakes should be offered occasionally. Many have noted feeding foods with added marigold, paprika, and astaxanthin can help increase the amount of color in these brightly colored fish if fed regularly. As for water quality, Neolamprologus leleupi aren't quite as sensitive as other Tanganyikans, but will still benefit from frequent water changes and will need to have hard, alkaline water to thrive. If cared for properly, they can be a great pop of color that might be just what your tank needs.
