L240 Vampire Pleco

Remarks: The L240 vampire pleco is a large Loricariid native to fast-flowing sections of a number of rivers in South America. It's common name comes from the interesting and unique dentition it has consisting of two large, sharp teeth that look like fangs, a feature in unique to their genus. It is presumed these teeth aid this pleco in feeding on invertebrates such as snails as it is a carnivorous species. These teeth are also used for defense and in territorial disputes making them rather violent affairs.

Its other common name, the galaxy pleco, and the second half of its scientific name, galaxias, are derived from its beautiful pattern. The L240 vampire pleco has a black body and fins with bright white spots making it look like the night sky. Due to its territorial nature, sensitivity to poor water quality, and size, this species is best kept in large tanks of at least 90 gallons and as the only Loricariid. Having lots of hiding spots in the tank will also encourage it to come out more during the day. If kept in the right conditions, these incredible plecos make a fascinating talking point to keep in a large South American community tank.
